- First Clinical Trial for Advanced Breast Cancer Vaccine Underway at UNC...
Researchers at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill have begun a clinical trial to investigate whether a breast cancer “vaccine” could help treat certain patients with advanced breast cancer. The vaccine may be helpful to women whose cells over-produce the HER2 protein (also written as HER2/neu).

- FDA Approves Tamoxifen For Women With Ductal Carcinoma in Situ...
Tamoxifen, the most commonly prescribed drug used to help treat breast cancer and prevent the disease in high risk women, has recently been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a new use: to help prevent invasive breast cancer in women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). DCIS is the most common type of non-invasive breast cancer. Approximately 41,000 women will be diagnosed with DCIS in 2000.

For years, researchers did not know why some individuals developed lymphedema (either sporadically or as a side effect of disease treatment) while others did not. Recently, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh have identified human genetic errors that can account for hereditary lymphedema. According to the researchers, these findings may help individuals suffering from either hereditary or secondary lymphedema.

Now researchers are beginning to investigate the cause of these cognitive problems, which many breast cancer patients have linked to chemotherapy. In a recent study, researchers say there does appear to be a link between chemotherapy and memory loss in some breast cancer patients.

- Study Targets Strategy to Help Breast Cancer Survivors Cope With Menopausal Symptoms... Coping with menopausal symptoms can be particularly difficult for breast cancer survivors. Certain breast cancer treatments such as chemotherapy can induce early menopause and other drug therapies such as tamoxifen can cause severe hot flashes. However, according to a new study, guidance and attention from a trained medical professional can significantly improve menopausal symptoms in breast cancer survivors without the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

3. Lobular Carcinoma in Situ (LCIS)/Lobular Neoplasia
Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS, also called lobular neoplasia) refers to a sharp increase in the number, appearance, and abnormal behavior of cells contained in the milk-producing lobules of the breast. Though categorized as a stage 0 breast cancer (the earliest stage), LCIS is not considered a cancer. Rather, it is “marker” (a signal) that breast cancer may develop.
