On the third Friday this October, many mammography facilities will be offering free or reduced-cost screening mammograms as part of breast cancer awareness month. To help detect breast cancer early when the chances for a complete cure are the greatest, all women should receive annual mammograms once they reach 40 years of age.

2. STUDY EXAMINES IMPACT OF BREAST RECONSTRUCTION ON WOMEN'S SEXUAL IMAGE
In a new study, women who had breast reconstruction after mastectomy (breast removal) were more likely to report that breast cancer had had a negative effect on their sex lives than women who had undergone mastectomy without reconstruction. The study also revealed that women who had breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) were the most satisfied with their body image after breast cancer.

3. FDA APPROVES ARIMIDEX FOR FIRST-LINE TREATMENT OF ADVANCED BREAST CANCER
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved the drug Arimidex (generic name, anastrozole) to help treat post-menopausal women with advanced breast cancer whose cancers are hormone receptor positive (or hormone receptor unknown). Physicians often examine hormone receptors in breast cancer cells at the time of biopsy or breast surgery to determine whether estrogen receptors (ER-positive) or progesterone receptors (PR-positive) are present. Patients whose cancers have ER or PR-positive receptors tend to have better prognoses than patients whose cancers do not have these receptors, since patients with hormone receptor positive cancers often respond better to chemotherapy or other drug treatments.

BREAST HEALTH/BREAST CANCER INFORMATION
1. THE LINK BETWEEN ABORTION AND BREAST CANCER RISK
The link between abortion and breast cancer risk is controversial. While several studies over the past two decades have explored the possible connection between abortion and breast cancer risk, the results have been contradictory. Some studies have shown a small increase in the risk of breast cancer in women with a history of abortions while other studies have found no such risk. This article examines the link between abortion and breast cancer risk and includes links to recent abortion/breast cancer medical studies.

2. BREAST CANCER RECURRENCE
Occasionally breast cancer can return after primary treatment.
