- Phytoestrogens (Soy) Show Similar Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy And May Help Prevent Breast Cancer...
A new study finds that phytoestrogens (natural chemicals found in many plants) provide women with many of the same benefits as hormone replacement therapy without increasing the risk of breast or uterine cancers. In addition to treating hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms, research has shown that phytoestrogens may help prevent breast cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis.

 - New Warning About Breast Cancer Drug, Herceptin...
Genentech, Inc., the manufacturer of the breast cancer drug Herceptin (generic name, trastuzumab), has issued a warning to physicians that 15 women with advanced (metastatic) breast cancer have died from adverse reactions to the drug. Genentech and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) maintain that Herceptin is “still a very safe drug” and that 25,000 women have been treated with Herceptin since its FDA approval in September 1998.

- Examining Cells Removed During Breast Cancer Surgery May Predict Recurrence...
A new study investigates the link between breast cancer recurrence and a protein found on some breast cancer tumors called the p53 tumor suppressor. Researchers have discovered that if accumulations of the p53 protein are found in cells removed during breast cancer surgery (mastectomy), the patient may be twice as likely to experience a return of breast cancer later in life.

 - One Study Finds Breast Cancers Found by Mammograms To Be Less Aggressive...
The results of a new study show that breast cancer tumors detected by routine screening mammograms may be less aggressive than tumors detected by other breast imaging exams. The majority of tumors detected by mammograms were also found to be slower-growing than tumors discovered after a woman showed signs that may indicate breast cancer, such as a breast lump, thickening, or skin dimpling.

Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure," a 5 kilometer (5K or 3.1 mile) race and a one mile run/walk to help promote breast cancer awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research. The first "Race for the Cure" event was organized in Dallas, Texas in 1983. Seventeen years later, "Race for the Cure" is now the largest series of 5K runs in the United States. In all, the "Race for the Cure" runs/fitness walks will take place in 109 different U.S. cities in 2000.

 - FDA Approves Aware Breast Self-Examination Pad...
The FDA has recently approved the Aware Breast Self-Examination Pad to help increase a woman’s confidence when she performs monthly breast self-exams. The pad consists of two ten-inch plastic sheets with a silicone lubricant sealed inside. During clinical trials, the Aware Pad increased a woman’s sense of touch by reducing friction between her fingers and her breast.

A new study shows that women who have rheumatoid arthritis, a condition in which the immune system attacks its own joint tissue, may be twice as likely to develop osteoporosis compared to healthy women. Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease affecting one third of post-menopausal women.
