- Tamoxifen Responsible for Decline in Breast Cancer Deaths...
A new study shows a significant decline in the number of deaths from breast cancer in Britain and the United States. While a number of factors contribute to the decline, researchers believe the increased use of the drug tamoxifen plays a large role. Other therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy have also helped slow the rate of breast cancer deaths.

- New Study Will Investigate Quality of Breast Cancer Care...
A new, large-scale study will investigate the quality of breast cancer care in the U.S. by analyzing patient records and interviewing patients and survivors. Among other factors, the study aims to determine the types of treatments breast cancer patients receive, whether patients are prescribed the full recommended doses of therapies, whether patients are given the option of participating in clinical trials, and more.

According to British researchers, breast cancer is more likely than any other type of cancer to spread to the spine, causing severe bone pain, yet the majority of breast cancer patients do not receive spinal surgery that can significantly relieve this pain. Spinal surgery can help stabilize the spine and relieve compression of the vertebrae and nerves.

- FDA Approves Saline Implants Despite Risks...
The FDA announced that it has approved the general use of saline (salt water) filled breast implants made by two companies despite the high rate of complications. The FDA has also put together a booklet explaining the risks of breast implants and is now requiring plastic surgeons to give patients the booklet and discuss possible complications before implants are placed.

- U.S. House Approves Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Bill...
The United States House of Representatives has approved legislation that would allow low-income women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer to receive treatment through expanded Medicare coverage. Currently, low-income women can receive free mammograms and Pap smears through a federally-funded program, but are not eligible for funding if they are diagnosed with cancer as a result of those screenings.

2. Advances in Mammography and New Breast Imaging Methods
Physicians use mammography and other breast imaging exams such as ultrasound, MRI, T-scan, and nuclear medicine imaging to help detect breast cancer in women.
